Working in My Sunday Best

The inspiration for my collection stemmed from the admirable and hardworking life of my 91 year old grandfather. He grew up in Glasgow and had to leave school at a young age to start work. I wanted to surround my work around his career as a blacksmith when he worked on the shipyards. Growing up he would always tell me tales about his time on the shipyards. I began by looking through lots of old family photographs and online research. I initially focused on the body movements of the workers in the shipyards, which lead me to concentrate on what they were actually wearing and how these clothes functioned on the body, doing this type of work. I found the comparison of work clothes and “good wear” of the time really interesting, as both types were unique. I want this collection to inform nostalgic times whilst appreciating how working class people from this age dressed to impress. I hope my designs not only express the functionality of the clothes but also the beauty of them, and as well as a celebration of passed times.
