Emily’s graduate collection focuses on her family and tells the story of the relationship between a parent and child, from being dependent on the parent to gaining full independence. Her inspiration for this collection stems from her mother’s time spent living in London in the 1980s and Emily’s time living in London in 2022. The sense of playfulness and freedom of city life was as apparent in the 80s as it was in 2022, and those are the feelings Emily hopes to evoke with this collection.
Emily practiced sustainability by using locally sourced materials where possible. While looking through her mother’s old photo albums, she was always fascinated by the photos of her mother’s time in London. She took silhouette and colour inspiration from the fashion of the 1980s. Emily dyed the fabrics used by hand to achieve the natural patchiness that comes with hand dying.
