Tread Softly

Through this collection the body becomes a fluid signifying system. The collection addresses the body, look by look, by abstracting areas for consideration – hair, skin and flesh.

The visuals supporting the collection emerged when I began gathering hair that washed out of the scalp and placing it on a shower wall, letting the strands take their shape, and documenting it. The visuals associated with the skin came about when I found myself studying the shapes water made on the surface of a body whilst semi-submerged. When photographing the body in water, I began to understand that flesh held a place in this conversation too. The visuals of influence tease on the borders of the grotesque yet the collection is made palatable through the employing of soft hues and light fabrics.

These mundane habits of observation became essential points of consideration to my work. Personal rituals allowed for a subconscious development of a reconsidered understanding of the physical self. The collection’s abstraction of a feminine form to appreciate and exaggerate hair, skin and flesh became an act of liberation. The body becomes unrecognisable for what it once was and so, apolitical.

These overdrawn, soft sculptures intend to be appreciated through the sensorial experience of the wearer.
