Lír

The designer has named their graduate collection ‘Lír’ after the old Irish word for “the sea,” which is also the name of the sea God in Irish mythology. The pronunciation of ‘Lír’ is a combination of the word “love and “fear” which is what the designer explores throughout this collection. While the sea and beach bring the designer comfort, they also feel a sense of terror when they overthink the vastness and depth of the sea.

The designer’s primary source of inspiration for this collection is a bench located on Bundoran Beach in Co. Donegal, where they would sit during the summer when they needed a break from the chaos of life and the world around them. Watching the sea from this bench was incredibly calming, but also evoked a sense of fear when the designer thought too much about it. To express these conflicting emotions towards the sea, the designer used textiles inspired by the beach surroundings, layering darker and lighter colours to create the desired effect in their collection.
