My collection was heavily inspired by my family, specifically a family holiday we took in our campervan back in 2007. We travelled up the coast of Ireland starting at home in the west of Clare and taking the Wild Atlantic way up to Belfast. I took shapes from old photos of our Talbot Elddis campervan and the strong structural aspects the physical van had to give. As well as incorporating the sea and coastlines in draping, stand work, and embroidery techniques. I wanted to portray the cycle of our emotions as a family throughout our journey up the coast, starting off strong and tight and slowly becoming less connected and more chaotic as tensions rise with the whole family living, eating, sleeping and travelling all under one small roof. I took my colour inspiration from the sea and was also heavily inspired by the crashing waves and cliffs along Ireland’s coastlines even hand-dying fabrics which allowed me to achieve the perfect gradient and help replicate the ocean waves. I also reused old denim pieces from my childhood giving a patchwork effect to my collection as well as allowing me to have a more sustainable approach to design.
