This project is built in the combination and exploration of Eastern Asian traditional garment construction, along with Irish primary research in colour, material, and function. Michéal takes inspiration from Japan’s Mount Fuji and how it is viewed as an iconic symbol of Japanese and Asian history and culture. With Carrauntoohil, Ireland’s highest peak, he derives inspiration from the mountainous regions and vast green landscapes that are so famously associated with Ireland. Looking at the two mountains synonymously, the project is an homage to the mountains and an appreciation for their natural textures, patterns, structures, and colour. From this, Micheal makes work inspired by the practicality of outdoor garments and the functionality of traditional Asian silhouettes.
