My Project explores the process of my mother learning English. My mother is a French native and
from the age of eight, was sent to Leighton Buzzard just north of London every summer to friends of
her Parents to learn English. Leighton buzzard was an old English town with old English values.
Shirley and Lenne, a railway engineer and a Primary school teacher thought my mother the basis of
the English language.
At the age of 20, in the very first year of the Erasmus programme my mother went to NUI Galway
where she met my father and subsequently stayed for life. Therefore learning most of her English
here. My project explores the contrast of these two settings, old England and Student life in Galway
in the late 80’s
