Islander

My collection is titled “Islander”. I embarked on a project to celebrate the island of Ireland. The geology of the island has always fascinated me, and the flora has always inspired me. As sustainably is a passion of mine I also wanted to incorporate this aspect into my collection. I only used Deadstock materials to create my collection, that otherwise would have gone into landfill.

Looking at the patterns that water erosion causes in the rock formations on the island I was inspired to use these patterns to embellish my collection. I used techniques such as embroidery, applique, hand knitting and hand manipulating of stitches on a domestic flatbed knitting machine.

During the making process I often wondered would it have been easier to create the garments from scratch rather than using deadstock material as sometimes I found it extremely difficult to pull the design in my head out of the deadstock materials. I wanted my collection to represent warmth and safety, being cocooned or swaddles in the clothing.
