My graduate collection ‘spasm’ is based on the chronic pain disordered called Fibromyalgia, which is widespread muscular pain. To feel like you have bruises all over your back, you are not able to sit or stand, feeling like your muscles are being pulled in ten different ways and then there are shooting pains. This all comes along with fatigue and mental stress and is known as an “invisible” disorder, meaning from the outside everything can look normal. This has been a life experience for me to learn to live with it and accept. I want to express through the construction of my garments the feeling of being restricted and create tightness around the body. My graduate collection is turning an issue that was something negative for me into something positive.
Construction and fit are important in the garments, representing the mood of restriction. It is a fitted and tailored womenswear collection, with a shape inspired by the wrist band. I scaled up a larger model of my wrist band, experimented with pattern drafting and used this on the stand to develop shape. I focused on the key painful areas of the body to further develop shape. Creating good tailoring and fit was important throughout this process. Technical seams and stitching were important and helped me to construct. My Fabrics and colour were inspired by a mood of pain and images of bruising, with fabrics ranging from suiting’s, satins, lama and power net mesh.
