Make-Do’

Based in the Northern Triangle of Central America, the countries of Guatemala, Honduras, and El Salvador, my inspiration is drawn from the adaptation of children to their environment in the poverty-stricken shantytowns. The children in these shanty towns adapt to their environment and unlike those from richer neighborhoods, these children do not have access to fancy toys, and so they make-do with basic toys, such as second-hand teddy bears, footballs and homemade skipping ropes. The foundation for this collection is to showcase the toys these kids find joy in despite their misfortune. I responded using my own drawings of the make-do toys the children played with. I researched and designed from found teddy bears and footballs to inspire my collection. I let this concept inspire my collage and shape development. In my work, I translated images of the kids in this environment to inspire techniques such as exposure of raw edges and hand-stitched ripped seams. This project also looks back into south America culture and their use of craftmanship which inspired me to develop my craft by applying hand stitching and embroidery work in certain areas. Using materials such as boucle, fleece, denim, pvc, cotton print, lame, and wadding to contrast between soft and structured fabrics.
