My Collection is inspired by the momentous occasions in my grandmother Anna B’s life before she became sick at a young age and developed dementia in her later stages of life. The photographs and mementos she kept, tell the story of her younger years. The images and memories captured in the photographs gave me an insight into the milestones that gave my Nanna’s life purpose, which I wanted to celebrate in each garment. I focused on creating a timeline beginning with my grandmother’s upbringing in Ireland in the 1930’s, her nursing career in England in the 1950’s and her family life in America in the 1960’s. The spec is achieved by re-creating her nurse’s uniform and the playful dresses she wore in America. I used stand work, innovative cut, and layering to build the story on top of the garments. I combined clinical, modern fabrics with traditional fabric. I Introduced colour and playful print to reflect the glamour and fun of America in the 60’s, while details of hand stitching and layering traditional fabrics such as original lace from her house, created detail of her roots, and the handcrafted elements of old Irish life. The celebration of life and Anna B’s strong, caring demeanor that the photos portrayed is shown and carried throughout each process of my final collection.
