My collection takes inspiration from a classic horror film trope “the evil clown”. Seen in many films such as “it” and “killer clowns from outer space”. In my research I looked at how the happy joyous figure of the traditional figure of a clown has changed over time to something much darker. This also aligns with the concept of transformation and getting into character. This led me to look at the process of putting on the makeup and costume.
Silhouette of the garments is influenced mainly by the facial features of the auguste clown make up such as the large rounded mouth and nose. The traditional oversized, baggy, relaxed fit of the clown’s costume informed the silhouette.
Using a black, grey, white and red colour palette because of the nature of the old photographs I was looking at during my research. The colour black is often associated with fear and death. The dark red colour came from the clown’s features such as their mouth and nose. Red is also a symbol of aggression, anger, and danger. The half and half nature of the fabric placement again follows this side by side changing nature of the clown. Regards to prints I have incorporated large polka dots a traditional print associated with clowns
