This collection was inspired by my Dutch nationality. I was born in Amsterdam and I wanted to use my identity as a source of originality in creating innovative pattern cutting, tailoring, and sculpting a women’s wear collection. One-third of the Netherlands lies below the sea level. Historically windmills in the Netherlands served many purposes but the most important was pumping water out of the lowlands so the land could be farmed. While the Netherlands lies 6.7m below the sea level Around 17% of the country’s current land area has been reclaimed from the sea or lakes using windmills. The significance of the windmill became my direction for sparking my design inspiration. My theme then progressed and developed into a more modern take using wind turbines as I felt traditional Dutch windmills were too old fashioned and I wanted a more modern approach. While looking at the wind turbines structure and shape I formed great inspiration in its rotary sweeping motion predominantly leading my designs with circular arcs and curves. I aim to achieve this in my drawings by use of a compass and placing it on the pivotal points on the body using the rotary sweeping motions mimicking the wind turbine.
