My graduate collection is based on the famous poem by Edward Lear ‘The owl and the pussycat’.
The collection captures the childlike simplicity of the poem while still managing to transport you to a dreamlike state. I was inspired by the beautiful images that are described in the poem and the whimsical feeling it creates. By wearing these pieces, you are transported into a dream-like state. My aim was to create a womenswear collection of luxury pieces that exudes that magical quality of gentle romanticism.
Throughout the collection, I have created clean innovative garments that have a sculptural 3D quality. I experimented with irregular pattern pieces to create something new and exciting. I used my own drawings in response to the poem to create my textures. My process of designing and making varies from pattern drafting to stand work, incorporating draping to give volume and the three-dimensional element to my pieces. My colour choices are based on the watercolour paintings Lear created in his later years, soft pale pastel colours that reinforce the dream-like state I have created.
My inspiration came from my own personal response to the poem. My drawings of the curves of the cat’s body. I got inspired by the beautiful colours described and the romantic lines of the poem.
My fabrics have a dreamlike atmosphere. I chose a variety of organza to play up the dreamy, romantic state while the neoprene and the cotton fabrics create the comfort and security every good dream should have.
