My unisex collection is inspired by my relationship with my father, Nicholas who serves in the Irish Défense Forces. In 2003 my dad served in Lebanon when I was 6. As a child I was fascinated by his trips abroad to Lebanon . I wanted to contrast my childhood innocence with my Dad’s experience of dangerous war-torn territories. My aim was to create a fun, playful and energetic collection inspired by our separate lives during 2003 while recognising the father-daughter connection.
The key elements that inspired the collection were my dad’s service jacket and my dolls pram. I developed my shapes through innovative pattern cutting and then developing those shapes on the stand. I recreated some of my childhood drawings by directly hand drawing onto fabric. I chose to work with wool inspired by my Dad’s jacket and satin inspired by my dress up costumes, I merged the colour stories to have pink wool and green satin. The outcome was to achieve a childhood innocence unisex collection using the masculine and childlike spec.
