Shioda/Seashore

In 3rd year I started weaving on a 4-shaft loom. During the summer of 2019 I visited Claire Island to take part in weaving workshops with professional weaver Beth Moran. Upon returning to college for 4th year, I wanted to weave fabrics suitable for making kimonos. The name Shioda comes from my Grandmother, Elizabeth Shioda, who was born in Wales but whose parents were from Japan. Growing up I was told Shioda translated to seashore. My collection is a series of textiles, woven and knitted, inspired by colours and patterns that I found while taking photos of the Sunny South east coastline. I experimented using silk yarn and hemp yarn because my research found that kimonos are produced using these yarns. Many of the textiles were produced to be 40cm wide, which is standard kimono fabric width.
