Away with the Fairies
Away with the fairies is a personal reflection on the Covid-19 pandemic. During the pandemic, I spent a lot of time at home in my room due to the restrictions. This led to a lot of daydreaming whilst sitting on my bed. I thought about how in Tír na nÓg there was no sickness and longed for this fantasy. This led to researching Irish mythology and learning more about the ‘Other world’.
This collection is about the spiritual, dreamy and untouchable world I longed for and is a visualisation of the ‘Other world’ using symbols, shapes and colours. One of my main inspirations is Bridgid, the goddess of healing. Bridgid masters the balance of fire and water which are symbols of the masculine and feminine. She is known for her protection and is a gentle kind woman yet stern and strong. She is worshipped on Imbolc which is aligned with the first day of spring and the idea of rebirth. With the easing of restrictions and finally going back into the ‘Real-world,’ it felt like a rebirth into a more normal life. The collection comprises a contrast of light and heavy fabrics to reflect Bridgid being both a healer and protector. Inspired by the balance of masculinity and femininity the collection focuses on using both delicate and protective fabrics. I would describe my collection as utilitarian and romantic, creating balance while redefining the idea of protection.
