“On September 17, 1925, Frida was involved in a serious bus accident, which left her with a broken spinal column, a broken collarbone, broken ribs, a broken pelvis and 11 fractures to her right leg”.
The initial inspiration for my collection stemmed from Frida Kahlo’s Diary and a particular focus on the life altering event which radically changed Frida’s life. The injuries she sustained to her bones during the near fatal bus crash and the medical devices she relied on to live a fulfilled life kick started my design process. The idea of restriction mixed with the gentle feminine nature of bows, which Frida had been known for as a child in her hometown, were the focal point of this collection. I remained focused on her back injuries and the medical corsetry throughout my design and construction process whilst combining them with the soft nature of her youth. This resulted in a tailored and tonal collection that incorporated creative pattern cutting and gathered details.
