PG-13

Inspired by the 1984 film ‘Gremlins’ my collection stems from my love for 80’s nostalgia films, special effects makeup and cheesy horror. This black comedy horror tells the story of the folkloric mischievous creatures known as ‘gremlins’ as they wreak havoc on the town of Kingston Falls.

The title of the collection,‘PG-13’, refers to the fact this was one of the two films which led to the need for this particular content rating to be created.

Other than the fantastical storyline I was drawn in by the menacing, ghoulish appearance of the creatures. Through the use of fabrics and sewing techniques I aimed to capture their alienesque, reptilian features.

I created voluminous stacked, pleated, and wadded sleeves and pant legs to represent their elongated fleshy limbs. Inspired by the intricate detail of their textured skin I manipulated the fabric using piping cord to create grooves and extrusions in the garments.

I combined these techniques with fabrics with sheen such as satin and shantung along with a textured leatherette in order to capture the leathery, slimy nature of the gremlins.
