“Connla”

My final collection is focused on a folklore I am very fond of, the life and legacy of Cuchulainn, one of Irelands greatest warriors.  During my research into his life, I stumbled across the tale of Cuchulainn and Aoife’s son.  It is a story that leaves a bittersweet taste, as an unavoidable tragedy occurs as forcing Cuchulainn to kill his son with his own hands.  To achieve my silhouettes, I used “The Book of Kells” as the base for my designs.  While studying the pages, I recreated some of the repeated line art and symbols using knots and shibari techniques.  I used a soft rope for the knotting as there is a tenderness to the story that I didn’t want to lose by using a stiff rope.  As I was designing, I intentionally created pieces without closures, such as zips as I wanted to keep it as authentic to the time by excluding the more modern closures.  As the story begins to unfold the knots on the looks begin to loosen.  The rope will gradually get looser to represent the loss of his so, until the final knot is undone, and he is left alone.
