Curiosity is a wonderful thing. As a child, I remember gazing wondrously at the sparkling stars in the clear night sky, dreaming about the magic of it all, imagining the adventures of exploration out there, and yet, fearing all that is still unknown about the immense expanses of the universe. I am inspired by the bravery and dedication of those who were the first to venture into space, particularly Valentina Tereshkova, the first lady to do so. These pioneers and heroes, and what they wear on their expeditions has inspired my collection. Deconstructing their extravehicular mobility units (spacesuits) under X-Ray has influenced design elements in my design process. This deconstruction process enabled me to reimagine these shapes and forms in a new way, and develop a collection of garments that explore voluminous silhouette. My fabrics, polyamide, PVC and denim and the textures within my collection were developed in response to the surface of the moon, while the technical detailing was inspired by the representation of the spacesuit under X-ray. My colour story reflects the abysmal blackness of space, punctuated by the bright stars, planets, galaxies and spacecrafts.
