My collection is based on the sleep cycle and the areas of the brain that are affected by dreaming. Using these areas of the brain I worked with anchor points on the body to create a feeling of movement and fluidity. The rigidness or lightness of the fabrics I chose represent the different levels of movement within the body and mind while we are dreaming. The heavier fabrics convey the early stages of the sleep cycle as we are going from ‘awake’ to early sleep stages, when our minds are more rigid and controlled. The lightweight, airy organza represents the mental weightlessness we feel as we enter dreaming and R.E.M sleep. I used creative pattern cutting to drape the movement throughout the collection to portray various frequencies of heaviness and lightness that we feel as we dream.
