‘SOUL ‘II’ Soul’

The source of inspiration for my collection was from the iconic 70s African American, song and dance television show Soul Train and their founder Don Cornelius. Soul music had brought, joy and happiness through the lyrics of musicians like, James Brown, Diana Ross and Marvin Gaye. The Rhythm and Groove of soul music became a source of escape for the African American community, who experienced discrimination during this time. My aim is to create a unisex collection portraying the energy of this music and the dance moves. This is achieved through the mix of traditional 70s fabrics, such as satin, corduroy, denim, and fur, and vibrant colours, gold, purple, yellow, and blues, with 70s inspired bubble and shadow typography. The eclectic mix of colours, fabric, and print bring life spirit to each garment, just as the music and culture of Soul brought to the world.
