Keep her in by the bank

My collection was inspired by my father’s family heritage of “Boating”. From the 1930’s until Christmas 1959 my father and his family worked and lived on the 34M Barge. Growing up I was always enthralled by the stories and photographs of that era. The spec of my collection seeks to capture the ridged structure and frame of the barge itself. The visualisation of looking through the barge windows and the reflection of the river as it flows beneath is captured through the wool circles with metallic thread. I wanted to use materials like wool and corduroy that are symbolic of the working environment of that time. As my story unfolds I gradually introduce the sacks used to transport goods on the barge, portraying the manual labour of the workers and how they pull and drag from port to port.
