#GOALS is inspired by Naomi Wolf’s book ‘The Beauty Myth’.
It explores the reality that more and more people suffer from Body Dysmorphic disorder (BDD) and body anxieties, due to unrealistic beauty ideals, doctored photographs and body shaming that we are inundated with via social media and magazines. To portray this concept I chose to develop garments that represent distorted reflections with images of body ideals superimposed onto them. Through experimenting with padding, creative pattern cutting and gathering I developed silhouettes that portray distorted body shapes to show what a person suffering from BDD would see when they look at themselves, on these exaggerated shapes I used PVC applique to illustrate ideal body images to portray how we are influenced by social media.
