Talking Drum

My collection is inspired by my African Upbringing and love for music. As music and dance are a vital part of African ceremonies, I have focused on exploring the concept of the importance of music and dance in African ceremonies focusing on the drums one of the most prominent instrument’s when it comes to music across a lot of African ceremonies. My looks are inspired by Ashanti drumming which is a method of drumming used to communicate when played, it’s also referred to as the talking drum, the cohesive method combines structure with a sense of flow and movement, I translated this in my collection through the use of drape for flow and movement and boning for structure to create a cohesive collection that embodies the Ashanti drums.

My favourite part of the design process is making the garment seeing all my initial ideas and concepts come to life. I want the wearer to feel a sense of bliss and comfort as that’s how music and dance makes me feel. Working through the pandemic Was a change it meant being a little more resourceful and creative.
