My aim was to create an androgynous collection for Autumn/Winter 2021/22, consisting of mostly upcycled/dead stock material. Dating all the way back to the Neolithic period, the walls of the Loughcrew Cairns portray artwork that one must look closely to find. Asymmetrical, curvilinear, and geometrical in shape, the visuals on these walls have striking similarity to Stephen Cacciatore’s ‘La Buerlinica’ on the Berlin Wall. ‘La Buerlinica’ jumps out at the viewer right away with its prominent monochrome palette and extra-terrestrial-like beings. Focusing on the latter for silhouette and colour, and the Loughcrew Cairns for print and texture, this collection is very much a combination of the unique properties of both walls. Much of my design development for this collection came from working in 3D by building on the mannequin and body, gradually adding and subtracting pieces and seams. Focusing on the petroglyphs of the Cairns, much of the textures featured are hand stitched, hand painted, or printed with hand-made stencils, and all are either detachable or hidden so they take some time to find, in similar fashion to the source!
