Off-The-Clock

My collection, ‘Off The Clock,’ is inspired by the Jazz Culture of the 1930’s to the 1960’s, closely lookingThe influence of oppression in society played a major key role of the developments of jazz music as it was a way of protecting their cultural identity. This collection is an ideology response of the black community responding to oppression with dramatic rhythmic flow caused by jazz music. My garments explore the quick upbeat tempo to the subtle rhythm of the blues. These garments are an exploration of the sound of music that came from the racial issues of the time. My interpretation on the zoot suit symbolises the movement and rhythmic flow of jazz music and its culture. My inspiration when choosing fabrics was directly taken from the contrast of musical pulses caused by jazz music and the rhythmic contrast along with the complexity of the jazz culture and living. The design is a combination of the Zoot Suit and the rhythm response to the quick beat of Jazz. My aim was to construct boning in a response to the pulsing and vibration flow of jazz music in an elegant yet fun atmosphere.
