A playful pastiche of the dailiness of daily life, Rachel’s body of work encompasses the ideas of Absurdism through the lens of the mundane and arbitrariness of the everyday. Absurdism is the theory that existence in general is bizarre, or absurd. It deals with the implication that there is no higher purpose to life and that the world lacks meaning. Her inspiration comes from the banalities and the routine of the quotidian while simultaneously investigating her internal dialog and the external presentation of the self.
Text is a central element both in terms of capturing the stream of consciousness and in the repetition of often-overlooked words that are vital in the communication of thoughts and ideas. There is a Dada-esque quality to her collection of “nothing” words. By blending elements of photography, collage, traditional printmaking techniques and new technologies, Rachel creates a documentation of the ordinary and the everyday through her practice.
