In this exploration of home Katie has uncovered parts of her childhood home in an atmospheric nature. Her home dates back to 1840 and there are definitely some untold stories yet to be discovered. Through this study she has taken inspiration from the home in contemporary art and how it represents the mothers womb and Katie’s own personal subconscious. She challenged herself to look deeper into the relationship that she personally has with her mother and how it has evolved over the years. This project is an ode to her mother and everything she has sacrificed for her, including this house.
Using methods such as analog photography, video, projection and cyanotype Katie has created a looming atmosphere of the darkness that this house holds. This coincides with her relationship with her mother and proposes a juxtaposition between the two as this house only gets darker and her relationship with her mother only gets brighter as she ages. Katie explores the concept of time and how she, as a young adult in Ireland feels left behind with this house. She explores certain areas of the house such as the stairs and the windows as portals but captures the sense of feeling trapped within. She illudes to her childhood in her work in a subtle yet effective manor and the different stages of life in your early 20’s.
