SELF-PORTRAIT

My work explores personal identity and self- discovery. Carl Jung’s theory on the shadow-self has a large impact on my work. The shadow exists as part of the unconscious mind and is composed of repressed ideas, weaknesses, desires, instincts and shortcomings. This archetype is often described as the darker side of the psyche. As a result of exploring this theory a lot of the work I create are self-portraits. I use photography as a means of self-expression –to identify with hidden qualities of my character, to better understand my reality, and to express my interpretation of the world around me. The monochromatic colour palette has great importance in my work the blackness represents the inner void of the unconscious while the light represents positive energy.
