In my work I am interested in notions of the grotesque and portraiture. The ideas of attraction and repulsion found within the grotesque body inspire my practice.
Using drawing I recreate the face using the structure of hair. For me, hair is associated with beauty, but in these works I have perverted this idea.
The control I experience through drawing is very important to me. Similar to Frankenstein creating his monster through a variety of body parts I am creating my monsters through my drawings.
I find a subject of beauty such as the human face, I then disfigure it and take the “beauty” away. The final part of my process of control is attempting to bring the beauty back into a subject that has become something of repulsion.
