Mental illness as a broad spectrum can be unified as experiencing different states of mind, which allows one to perceive things differently to most average people. My work has been heavily influenced by the life and work of the Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama whom has experienced various mental states; she sees things in a different way to most and expresses it through her practice for others to experience. Throughout my research I’ve come to conclude that people who have different mental illnesses are of a higher intelligence, and are incredibly creative.
I’ve been deeply influenced by colour therapy and its effect on different states of mind. In art therapy the colour blue has been proven as the most responsive colour on a broad spectrum of mental illnesses. By using a spectrum of blue hues, pattern and gradients I’ve created an aesthetic theme in my work, using aspects of 3D and light installation to create a sense of unusual surroundings and optical illusions for the viewer to experience.
