GROTESQUE BEAUTY

Many women in our current society believe that to be physically attractive means you are happier within your life. Self esteem can lower and negative comments towards your own self begin to creep in and this can result in plastic surgery for some people that feel the need to fit into a ‘conventional beauty’ label. Through research by psychologists, they have found this is not the case. We rarely look at what we will be doing to our bodies during the quest to become beautiful. We only have the end result in our minds. We don’t see the ripping of the skin, the bleeding and sucking of the fat. We only imagine that when we wake up, we will be prettier that before.

Within this project, I look at the grotesque side of beauty. I focus on women that change their features in the desire to become more beautiful, through plastic surgery and other medical procedures. The grotesque side of this project is accompanied by the exploration of the actual procedures used to change these female features. The mirror is a major tool throughout this concept as it is what we use to see our reflection and what we use to judge ourselves.
