This collection was inspired by the International Firework Festival in Malta. I wanted to portray the atmosphere and excitement that surrounded the week-long festival. The dark skies, the cold breeze, the bright colours, the sounds, the people. There was something so spectacular about the immense size and scale of the fireworks and seeing people’s reactions to each one. I wanted to capture the experience of the festival from how I felt and remembered it months afterwards. I utilised different coloured glass beads to encapsulate the brightness and shininess of each firework. I shaped my crochet pieces of Look 1 into circles, depicting the ground fireworks called ‘ġigġifogu’, which rotate in circular patterns. Capturing movement was important to me while making this collection and so I incorporated beaded fringing and knit stitches strung with beads that swish and flow when worn.
