Picture Perfect

The “Picture Perfect” project explores unrealistic beauty standards on social media caused by edited photos and AI-generated content. Teenagers between twelve and fifteen are mainly affected and show a high sensibility regarding distorted self-image and worthiness. As Plato indicated, a mediator who shows people a grievance is needed so they can break out of the cycle of an existing situation. He emphasised questioning assumptions and critical thinking for proper understanding. Therefore, the idea is to illustrate the situation to prevent young social media users from losing their sense of reality.

By using playful colours and spirals, the attention is drawn to the deeper issue. The statement poster decorates the backside of an unfolded zine that contains a short comic where the main character goes through typical stages of cyberbullying and self-criticism. Maya, the protagonist, gets a threatening message and starts to doubt her outer beauty so much that she decides to edit photos with filters to increase the positive comments under her social media posts. At the same time, the story teaches about the next generation’s lack of empathy and compassion, measured by the countability of followers and likes instead of real-life friendships.
