Fashion Design

Áine King

Symbiosis

Symbiosis was born from a desire to part from the environmental disregard of the fashion design process, in direct response to witnessing hundreds of waste fishing nets litter the shores of the Irish coast.

The term Symbiosis describes the biological interaction between two species. This collection explores the potential to evolve from the current parasitic relationship humans share with the coastal environment to a mutualistic one.

This concept is executed through both design and materiality, reusing discarded fishing nets to create the garments. The pieces prioritise functionality and protection from the harsh coastal elements with the aim of encouraging the wearer to immerse themselves in the marine environment. This interaction allows the wearer to relate to the coastal environment, encouraging the development of conservation morals. The concept expands to include adaptable and interchangeable elements in each piece, using the discarded fishing rope to offer adjustable lengths, tightness, and the attachment/removal of interchangeable pieces, reducing the need for excess consumption.

Special focus was given to the environmental impact of the fabrics used. An effort was made to use waste materials, reclaimed materials, deadstock fabrics and upcycled duck down. Technical emphasis was placed on the execution of durable seaming, waterproofing, innovative pockets, warmth, and comfort for the wearer.
