Cephas

My Gibraltarian Heritage and family plays a major role in my life and is the primary inspiration for my collection, titled “Cephas”.

Cephas is the Aramaic word for Rock, the iconic geological structure of Gibraltar, symbolic of the steadfastness of family, and the name given to the disciple Simon by Jesus, the rock upon which he chose to build his church.

The collection draws heavily from the forms and shape of Gibraltar and its churches and Catholic iconography, inspired by my Nana’s strong faith.

Shape inspiration was derived from the arches and altars, primarily from St. Josephs Church and the Cathedral of St. Mary the Crowned, Gibraltar. Each look is wadded, adding structure and fullness to represent the weight of grief and silence. I chose a rich, jewel toned colour palette, taken from the church interiors, and incorporated beaded embroidery, to reflect the extravagance and grandeur of the Catholic church. My fabrics are satins, again, in reference to the magnificence of churches.
