Looking at the gendering of bodies in present day society, Rebecca Pidgeon focuses primarily on the nether regions of the body through a female gaze. Trying to capture genderless forms in her paintings she has been inspired by the Marriage Referendum in Ireland. Rebecca has focused on the LGBTQ community in Ireland and how the gender binary is restrictive and dated to them. She puts a contemporary twist on the stereotypical features that would suggest queer.
Through her use of a restrictive tonal palette with colours that hint at Pop art and through a representational style of painting she tries to capture the rigid nature of the gender binary. Rebecca’s process is a reductive one interested in the information lost from photography to painting. Reducing her images to simplified areas of colour, shape and form. She plays on the stereotypical colours associated with the masculine and the feminine.
