Aoife Brennan

Textophobia

Aoife Brennan’s work explores the integration of the body with latex and the relationship between them. She is interested in investigating the point where the body becomes victim to the entrapment of this material and how that is experienced through the senses. The artist’s imagery has a consistent black background to create an environment comprising only of the human body and the latex whilst the clothes are giving the body ownership over the material. The clothes themselves become sculptural forms, using a simplistic approach to create familiar shapes.

Her exploration of the materials positions the latex as almost becoming an extension of the body as it struggles for freedom. The elasticity creates an inexhaustible stretch, creating a greater feeling of apprehension and anxiety. Brennan’s intention is to engulf the viewer in this uneasiness, creating a space of distress that challenges the viewer to go beyond their comfort zone. The elasticity evokes the sensation of how far the viewer may be stretched into the experience.
