Performance Interface

“There are always some alternative constructions available to choose among dealing with the world.”  George A. Kelly, American psychologist and personality theorist.

My approach to painting seeks to bring accumulated fragments together into one place where the viewer may relate to them and organize their own constructs of possible meanings. The work explore ways of seeing and thinking about the world as experienced through the interface of our own consciousness and digital visual culture.

The paintings initiate from a process of identification with an image from online sources or my own photographs. I observe the surface representation that includes real world referents and the technological signs of mediation. Through the hands on application of paint, I reflect physically and consciously on the signs produced by culture and meditate on their implications.

The traces of the performance of painting on the surface index my perceptions and projections. It is my belief that the material surface of painting provides a valuable interface for an exploration of human understanding and perception. In my approach to painting, I am interested in materializing a tension between the actual and the theatrical. Like painting, the image is perceived as a type of Rubik’s cube with no one solution, rather a dynamic matrix of infinite possible constructions.
