‘’Don’t ask what the work is. Rather, see what the work does’’.  Eva Hesse

My Studio Practice is based on ephemeral art and the transcending nature of it. I am fascinated by the raw organic nature that surrounds me in the Shannon estuary. The natural materials of the shoreline are a constant inspiration in my work. The seaweed I have harvested takes on a completely different meaning when taken out of its own natural environment and then placed into a studio environment, it becomes hard and crispy and once dry is very fragile in this state.

The process of my work involves using coloured latex and plaster to emulate the natural forms gathered from the shoreline. It captivates me completely to observe the tidal ebb and flow of the river and the accumulation of seaweed that has been slowly poisoned by the chemicals from the local industries. Photography has played a vital role in documenting the process from which my sculpted pieces evolved. I plan to continue, using the ephemeral to create pieces that are tactile in nature.
