Exploring the theme of female beauty and perfection. This body of work titled Fractured Lives represents Rachel Murphy’s artistic interpretations. The initial spark and process explores and breaks down traditional values by which women and their bodies are presented. Informed by her research in the realms of feminism and youth culture, Murphy dissects the effects of the ‘ideal standard’ and communicates these views through the distorted doll, representing our fractured lives.
Rachel believes that women are forced by convention and social media pressure to look for bodily perfection and, in doing so, destroy their own inherent beauty. Fractured Lives represents how we present ourselves to the world, the image we betray versus the image we project. Murphy presents the mixed media installation Fractured Lives as a tool for the viewer, so that we can look inward and see our own beauty.
