Whispers of an Institution|

Through exploring the archives of St. Joseph’s Mental Hospital and having many conversations with people connected to the institution, in which one would consider a very taboo subject. Carmel Hegarty’s discourse in the subject matter is to portray the subtle beauty hidden beneath the darkness and to convey the stories of the vulnerable in her work. How one in their most challenging situations can permeate a delicate tender stillness of tranquillity, a slight glimpse of one’s soul.

Working with old photography and painting techniques with a modern touch, Hegarty creates a unique depiction of the staff and the patients who lived and worked in the hospital. She creates poignant art forms, which explores human fragility. The unique artworks come across as intimate peeks into someone’s emotional state of mind or a memory, which has begun to fade, leaving incomplete snippets in your mind.
