Built for a Better World

Modern technology is evidently developing rapidly and is often seen as a substitution of all characteristics of life. This is both exciting and intimidating. New technologies allow for advancement in medicine, education, work and leisure but when is the increased presence of technological growth too much? How will we know when we have taken it too far?

My work investigates possible consequences of advancements in technology and human enhancement. I have created a series of characters set in an alternative presence or a near future dystopia which are a clear product of genetic experimentation. This type of experimentation is already underway in labs around the world.

The characters depicted in both paintings and digital media are all based on children. They show clear signs of genetic mutation- they are hybrids, a mixture of human and animal. They are visually intriguing yet eerie as they serve to question the morality and safety of fast-paced changes in technology and science. The use of text adds a satirical tone to the work as the future of technology could go in any direction, ending with a modern utopia or in utter disaster.
