Ellen Mc Mahon’s painting practice focuses on combining portraiture with digital languages. Ellen’s motivation for creating these paintings derives from her willingness to connect with people. She achieves a balance between representation and creating her own sense of each figure and personality. By painting the people closest to her, she can capture a true sense of their personality.
Ellen’s intention is also to create her own response to social media style photographs through a body of large portrait paintings. The work also deals with the important issue of having a reliance on digital technology and digital enhancement as an artist today. She uses photographic images that capture a moment in time where the character is animated and caught in mid-movement.
Her artistic process has also been driven by the idea of social networking- each work is gently connected, through the personal relationship the artist has to each character. Strongly coloured flat grounds relate to use of colour in artworks influenced by popular culture. She focuses on the head and shoulders of the body, as if to represent a profile picture on social networking sites.
