‘The home is a site for the discussion of feminine conformity and the imprisoning oppression visited on women in the nineteenth century’ (Bryden & Floyd, 1999).
Gendered Space explores the concept of the human body in relation to interior domestic space. Drawn to scenes of a domestic nature the significance of the human body’s interaction and similarity to interior space forms a basis for Lauren Egan’s work.
Research on the various locations of interior domestic space that represent intimacy and memory, that are then manifested into psychoanalytic connotations that are placed upon the gendering of interior and exterior space. Egan’s research into the symbolic order and the representation of the feminine and masculine through symbolic meanings posed questions for further visual exploration.
The process of collage and drawing are fundamental to Egan’s creative process. Developing to inform her painted works that explore the relationship between the human body and interior domestic space through the manipulation photography, collage, drawing and painting.
Questions of objectification and altered space arise within Egan’s work, evoking an intimacy within the space and intrigue of the viewer.
