'---..'Abstract Tangents'
BA Fashion (with Collection Design)
This collection is a reimagining of Oskar Schlemmer’s 1926 ‘Triadic Ballet’ or ‘Das Triadishches Ballett’ which was a part of the Bauhaus theatre workshop.
The Triadic Ballet is an abstract, ballet-inspired performance, featuring costumes that distort, restrain and transform the body, the dancers’ movement limited by the materiality and form of the costumes. ‘Abstract Tangents’ merges sculpture, fashion and performance and is a ‘Queering’ of Oskar Schlemmer’s world, subverting the Bauhaus’ timeless design signature and principles through my perspective and sensibilities.
Responding to photographs by Man Ray and paintings by Carmen Herrera I have created geometric patterns and sculptural silhouettes that exaggerate the body. Using drape to create seam lines that curve around the body and distort form in subtle and contemporary ways as well as utilising tubular knit and experimental pattern cutting techniques to manipulate the wearer’s movement. This collection explores a contradictory world where playfulness meets restriction.
