Freedom To Roam
This collection aims to understand the connection between the act of remembering and the myth of return. If it is absence that defines much of Irish identity: the empty homestead, the fading photograph, the glance toward the horizon, who are we without these ideas? These motifs suggest that Irishness is not just rooted in place, but in displacement. I decipher themes of nostalgia within my garments. Rather than offering a resolution or romantic closure, the pieces will linger in moments of repetition, fatigue, and silence. By engaging with nostalgia critically, the collection aims not to dismantle memory, but to deepen it, allowing space for discomfort and hard truths. Staying connected to historic loss through nostalgia is a lot less about clinging to the past and more about understanding how we remember it. By recognising that we often see what we want to see, we can engage with history more thoughtfully. Honouring what has been lost without allowing idealised memories to replace truth, we can and must try better to understand both the past and ourselves.
