Spirit Store 9
BA Fashion (with Collection Design)
‘Spirit Store 9’, is an analysis of the visual and cultural design of Limerick city centre, and aims to create a contemporary response to this landscape.
A personal response to my environment, research and design stems from my perception of the space, and how I interpret the cultural and architectural beauty of my surroundings.
Viewing the city’s heritage through the brickwork and wrought iron fences that embellish the face of each street, I allow the Georgian era architecture to guide my research into the 1800’s. Taking inspiration from writers of this period including Oscar Wilde and H.G Wells, their exploration of dandyism, and its obsession with aesthetics, luxury and excess.
Juxtaposing different ideas of the city, one rooted in the modern day, the other set in the Georgian quarter of 19th century Limerick. Classic tailoring and dressmaking techniques come together with contemporary fabrics and cut, creating a world built on the visual culture of the city over two century’s.
Work Placement –
Quay to the City
‘Quay to the City’, which is a diffusion line of ‘Spirit Store 9’, uses my favourite aspects of Limericks architectural design to create a contemporary collection. Collaging the contrasting patterns and colours found around town. This collection is aimed at a young audience interested in carrying heritage with them into the future, and presents garments in a more commercial fashion than the main line which it takes its inspiration from.
Coat & Jeans Projects
The Coat project (3rd Year), and the Jeans project (2nd Year), gives students the opportunity to show their design style while working on their pattern cutting and construction skills. Pictured is a double breasted jacket made of wool, and 3/4 length pleated trousers made of denim and waxed cotton.
